Blogging
Blogs (online journals) can be used to improve writing, reading, and media literacy skills. Online programs like WordPress (http://wordpress.com) and Blogger (https://www.blogger.com) make it simple for teachers and students to create blogs. Blogging is a great way to improve literacy. For example, starting a blog during a novel study is a great way to create a forum where students can discuss and respond to different questions about the book. Every day I assign a student to be our classroom blogger. The student is responsible for taking notes throughout the day and writing a blog about our day. This activity not only improves their writing and recount skills, but it allows parents to read firsthand what is taking place in our class.
